Telescope Goldfish

A Chinese export product avant la lettre

The telescope goldfish originated in distant China more than 1,000 years ago. At that time, people bred carp, and due to a natural mutation, gold-colored specimens occasionally appeared. These golden carp were kept separate and selectively bred, eventually giving rise to the goldfish.

Initially, this fish was only allowed to swim in the ponds of the emperor. Over time, breeders continued experimenting with goldfish, leading to the development of new varieties. One of these was the telescope goldfish.

Through trade, goldfish eventually reached Japan, where they were further refined and selectively bred into telescope goldfish with elegant veil fins. In the 18th century, the fish spread worldwide through international trade.
