European paper wasp

(Polistes dominula)

Natural Climate Engineers

This work was created on commission for Huis van Hout, a design eco-lodge. The house is built with a wooden structure and its walls are insulated with paper, combined with off-grid technology.

The concept is completed by an interior furnished with carefully selected designer furniture.

Inspired by this idea, I created a sculpture of a wasp in the process of building its nest. A wasp constructs its nest by chewing on wood, turning it into a paper-like pulp, and then shaping it into a nest.

The paper nest is ingeniously designed to allow wasps to regulate the internal climate with ease, regardless of heat, cold, or humidity. This mirrors how Huis van Hout operates using its own off-grid systems.
