The coelacanth, once considered extinct, is one of the most fascinating discoveries in the field of paleontology. This fish belongs to the family of lobe-finned fish, and fossils of the coelacanth have been found from the Permian to the Cretaceous period. For science, it seemed to be a species lost to history. That was until 1938, when a fisherman off the coast of South Africa caught an unknown fish. After examination, it was determined to be a living coelacanth. This discovery surprised the scientific community, as the fish had been living deep in the ocean, at depths of around 200 meters, among the rocks.

In 1997, another coelacanth was discovered, this time on a local fish market in Mando, Indonesia. This discovery confirmed that two living species of coelacanth are now known.

As a result, the coelacanth is not only a creature of the past but also a living fossil, a species that was considered extinct for longer than it was known to be living.
