YEAR RINGS

This bespoke artwork was created for a couple seeking a meaningful sculpture that reflected their shared journey. The piece was made to celebrate their 10th anniversary. The challenge was to create something that not only captured their personal experiences but also had lasting value.

Just as a tree leaves behind a new tree ring each year in its trunk, this artwork symbolizes the different phases of their life together. Tree rings tell the story of the tree: times of growth and moments of difficulty. The tree rings of sequoias, which can live for over 1,000 years, even reveal historical weather conditions associated with the passing years.

For this work, I asked the couple to reflect on their ten years together and share their highs and lows in life. The happy moments emerged, while the less pleasant ones sank downward. The result is a piece that changes with the angle of the light, symbolizing how life itself is always in motion.

This work is not just a piece of art but also a time capsule. It offers future generations the opportunity to look back on this couple’s history, a lasting reminder of their shared journey.
